Veterans Matter: Addressing Key Issues and Resources for Support (Virtual)

This training session aims to equip participants with a thorough understanding of the unique challenges faced by veterans as they transition to civilian life. It will cover critical issues such as mental health struggles, substance use disorders, intimate partner violence, and homelessness, providing a holistic view of the veteran experience.

Participants will learn about the spectrum of resources and support systems available to veterans, including services offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), community organizations, and non-profit initiatives. The training will highlight effective strategies for working with veterans, emphasizing the importance of cultural competence, empathetic communication, and tailored support approaches.

Objectives:

1. Holistic Understanding of Veteran Needs and Challenges
– Objective: To provide a comprehensive overview of the unique challenges faced by veterans, including mental health issues, substance use disorders, intimate partner violence, and homelessness.

2. Resources and Support Systems for Veterans
– Objective: To inform participants about the various resources and support systems available to veterans and their families, focusing on mental health, legal aid, and housing assistance

3. Best Practices for Supporting Veterans
– Objective: To equip participants with best practices for effectively supporting veterans in various settings, whether in healthcare, community services, or legal environments.

Instructor

Monisha Scott is a dedicated Coordinated Entry Specialist at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, where she plays a vital role in the Healthcare for Homeless Veterans program. With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oakland University and a Master of Social Work from Wayne State University, Monisha brings over 20 years of extensive social work experience to her role, including a decade of service at the Detroit VA hospital.

Monisha is passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of veterans and their families, drawing inspiration from her own family heritage of military service. Her commitment to supporting those who have served our country is evident in her work, where she focuses on providing resources and assistance to homeless veterans, helping them navigate the complex systems of care.

Outside of her professional life, Monisha cherishes spending quality time with her loving husband and two children. She enjoys nurturing her plants and dreams of someday welcoming a fur baby into her family. Monisha’s blend of personal and professional dedication to veterans makes her a valuable asset in the field of social work, as she continues to advocate for and empower those who have selflessly served.
